Though known for his directing work, Rhys has over 20 years of professional editing experience, and editing has remained a cornerstone of his artistic practice throughout his career.
Rhys specializes in rhythmic, visually kinetic editing—from kaleidoscopic montages to dream-like sequences to quirky character studies—he creates sequences with heightened visual and narrative sophistication. While rooted in strong storytelling fundamentals, he works across documentaries, branded content, and artist collaborations, bringing his distinctive visual approach to diverse formats.
Rhys first fell in love with editing as a teenager during an internship at a post-production facility. He went on to work as a Staff Editor at MTV Networks, where he cut the 2008 Upfront Opening Tape. He also taught editing as an Adjunct Professor at CUNY Queens College before getting his MFA in Film/Video at CalArts.
His signature work includes creating the title sequences for Amazon's "TRANSPARENT" (Seasons 1-4 and the Musical Finale), which blend art film techniques with archival filmmaking to create a distinct emotional effect. He edited all episodes of his award-winning documentary series "We've Been Around", weaving animation, archival, and mixed media to create a dynamic visual language that brings LGBTQ history to life in each film.
As a Consulting Editor, Rhys brings his director's eye to post-production, helping shape acclaimed documentaries including: Crip Camp (Oscar nominated), Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain, The Lady and the Dale (HBO), The Disappearance of Shere Hite, My Sunnyside
In the branded space, Rhys excels at translating brand narratives into compelling visual stories that feel authentic rather than promotional. His approach combines cinematic storytelling techniques with marketing objectives, creating content that audiences want to watch and share. He understands how to build emotional connection while delivering key messaging, with expertise in everything from 30-second social cuts to long-form brand documentaries.
